Illustrative build walkthrough

## Peter’s booking app, from idea to first flow

Follow one small application through planning, implementation and a later change. The example uses a customer portal; its booking rules are defined in the stories.

The screenshots come from a real OwlMeans run of this request in October 2026. Peter, his customers and their bookings are fictional.

1. Step 1

    ### The request

    > Build a booking app for my repair workshop. Customers choose a service and an available time, then see their booking. Staff manage the schedule. Customers must only see their own bookings.

![The Start a project screen of the OwlMeans Platform, with Peter’s request typed into the application description](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-request-light.72dWjiYu_Z1Xt9bO.webp) ![The Start a project screen of the OwlMeans Platform, with Peter’s request typed into the application description](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-request-dark.Cky70vk-_11FdUq.webp)

2. Step 2

    ### The specification

OwlMeans turns the request into a plan you can review: services, available times, bookings, customer access and staff access. Check the rules before approving it.

The initial sketch lays out the landing page and application areas. Its labelled story placeholders show what still needs implementation.

3. Step 3

    ### The first connected stories

    > As a staff member, I can publish the bookable times for each service.

    > As a customer, I can choose a service and an available time, then confirm my booking.

Build them in the board’s order, starting with the staff schedule. Together they make the first useful flow, with real records, access checks and one rule that keeps two bookings off the same time.

![The story board of Peter’s booking app with the planned stories: the staff schedule first, then the customer choosing a service and a time](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-stories-light.DerdlBnu_Z15DoHw.webp) ![The story board of Peter’s booking app with the planned stories: the staff schedule first, then the customer choosing a service and a time](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-stories-dark.CEdIjV47_I6aX5.webp)

4. Step 4

    ### The working result

Try the implemented flow: choose a service, reserve a time and find the booking in your account. Open the staff view and check the same record there.

Then try a second customer. Their account must not reveal the first customer’s booking.

5. Step 5

    ### The next small change

After trying the app, Peter wants customers to request a different time. That becomes the next story, using the existing booking record and access rules.

Test that change on a phone as well as a larger screen. Keep the first booking flow working as the application grows.

![Peter’s booking app on a phone, where a test customer chooses a new time for a lamp repair booking before sending the request](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-change-light.0Dp0zhi1_Z1lhkCu.webp) ![Peter’s booking app on a phone, where a test customer chooses a new time for a lamp repair booking before sending the request](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-change-dark.h7cNeGqG_Z2kQpdn.webp)

### OwlMeans does things you don’t even think about

Peter asked for bookings. Here is what else OwlMeans took care of, and when he would otherwise have found out.

| What OwlMeans does | When you’d otherwise find out |
| --- | --- |
| A landing page, customer area, back office and administration area | When visitors, customers and staff each need their own screens |
| A rule in every story for who may read or change each record | When one customer opens another customer’s booking |
| A back office that only staff can open | The day a stranger signs up and finds the staff schedule |
| Terms, privacy and cookie pages with cookie choices, ready for your reviewed text | The week before launch |
| Background jobs and queues when a story needs them | When the first report times out the page |
| Project instructions and package skills in the repository | When a new developer or coding agent joins |

The application code sits in the generated repository you own. Review the legal pages for your business and test the application before release.

![The code editor of the OwlMeans Platform with the generated repository of Peter’s booking app, open at the shared booking record](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-foundation-light.QO1Qpeg0_Z1DYdWr.webp) ![The code editor of the OwlMeans Platform with the generated repository of Peter’s booking app, open at the shared booking record](https://owlmeans.com/_astro/peter-foundation-dark.DRPiOVc7_ZRKlBR.webp)

The generated repository in the platform’s code editor.

1. The booking record, defined in the shared package
2. Separate packages for the API, back end, shared definitions, web interface and worker
3. Instructions for the next coding agent

## Projects like yours

The people and projects below are fictional illustrations of what you could build. They are not customer testimonials.

### Peter’s repair workshop

Peter needs customers to book repairs without exchanging messages about every available time. His first flow connects a service list, a booking form and a staff schedule.

Continue where you work

## A project your next agent can understand

Keep developing in OwlMeans, connect a supported coding agent through MCP, or continue in the repository with your own tools. The code travels with its project instructions and package guidance.

Claude Code, Codex and other general coding agents can take it from there. OwlMeans supplies the specialized starting structure and workflow they can build on.

Running the application elsewhere also means configuring its database, identity and other services. The [handoff guide](https://owlmeans.com/docs/platform/how-to/continue-development-with-another-coding-agent/) explains the choices.

FAQ

## Common questions

### What is OwlMeans?

OwlMeans builds web applications from a description. It turns your idea into a specification you can review and a project board of user stories, then builds the app’s foundation and main flow. You try the result in a live preview and keep building with OwlMeans or your coding agent.

OwlMeans can also rebuild a project you started with another tool. If you would rather have a team build it for you, see [OwlMeans Services](https://owlmeans.com/services/).

### Who is OwlMeans for?

OwlMeans is for people who want a working application without first building its foundation, and for anyone whose prototype has become difficult to change. Developers can continue in the repository with their own tools or connect a supported coding agent.

It has starting architectures for full-stack web apps, chatbots, AI agents and AI data-processing pipelines. Ready starting points cover work tools such as CRM, helpdesks and recruiting, customer portals, SaaS for multiple organizations, background processing and AI workflows. See [Applications you can build](https://owlmeans.com/docs/platform/applications/).

### Do I own the code?

Yes. The application code sits in a repository you own, together with its project instructions and package guidance. You can connect GitHub, publish the code to your own repository and keep developing it with OwlMeans, a coding agent or your own tools.

Running the application elsewhere also means configuring its database, identity and other services. The [handoff guide](https://owlmeans.com/docs/platform/how-to/continue-development-with-another-coding-agent/) explains the choices. A Services project ends the same way: you receive the application, its source and tailored agent guidance. The [Terms](https://owlmeans.com/legal/terms/) and [Services Terms](https://owlmeans.com/legal/services-agreement/) set out the rights.

### How much does OwlMeans cost?

You can start on the Free plan and pay nothing: one project and one story a month developed without credits. Pro costs €18 a month plus VAT in the EU/EEA, or $20 a month elsewhere before tax, and lets you publish to production on your own domain.

Pro also includes a weekly credit limit of 100,000 credits, a new project a month and a story per subscription week without spending credits. It renews monthly until you cancel, and you can cancel online at any time. See [Pricing](https://owlmeans.com/pricing/).
