Convert a local project using MCP
On this page
Beta. Use a stdio MCP client when the source is on your machine. Open the original project’s directory before connecting.

- Configure OwlMeans MCP for your coding agent and sign in.
- Open the source workspace. Use
--project-dirwhen you need to specify the directory explicitly. - Ask the agent to inspect the source and summarize its intended behavior.
- Start intake with
convert_project, supplying a name andaboutdescription. Record the returned project identifier. - Read
conversion_statusfor that project. Usecheck_convertibleonly after an intake project exists. - Review the verdict, proposed work and estimate with a person before proceeding.
- Use
proceed_conversionfor the next supported decision, with confirmation only after the person agrees. - Keep the coding agent and its MCP connection open while local source work runs. Handle
next_questionwhen status says it is waiting for a person.
Local conversion can ask permission to move the source into __viable_converted/ and build the new app around it. Read the question before approving. The original files stay available in that directory; declining stops this conversion.
For a local source tree, start from the workspace with --target local and omit repoUrl:
{
"name": "Task conversion practice",
"about": "A small task app with creation, completion and filtering",
"confirm": true
}
Set confirm: true only after approving the displayed action and any credit conditions.
For a repository-backed intake, convert_project accepts repoUrl and branch. A supplied repository URL takes precedence over the working directory. Check that choice before starting.
{
"name": "Task conversion practice",
"about": "A small task app with creation, completion and filtering",
"repoUrl": "https://github.com/mdn/todo-react",
"branch": "main",
"confirm": true
}
Verify the branch against the current repository before using this example. Read the conversion tool reference for exact arguments and availability. Keep originals and license notices until verification is complete.
